Oochigeas is a midseason semi-double intersectional (an Itoh peony which is a hybrid created by crossing a tree peony and an herbaceous peony) with dramatic, smoky-color combinations. The exquisite blooms of this extremely rare peony are a beautiful fusion of creamy apricot-pink petals painted with purple flares that mellow into lighter mauve.
The name of this beautiful peony pays homage to Oochigeas, a legendary Native American figure. Oochigeas is the heroine of a 19th-century Mi'kmaq and Maliseet fairy tale which is a fusion between the French "Cinderella" story and Wabanaki folktales. Oochigeas is choosen over her tormenting sisters by the 'prince' through passing several tests to demonstrate her courage, honesty, and respect.
