The Family

Brent and Anne have spent the past seventeen years learning each other's cultures

and family traditions, slowly sculpting a life together that is both

southern rebel & west coast sustainable.

We are dreamers

Anne, a 6th generation Californian was raised on a small ranch in the high mountains of Northern California. Growing up, she was happiest roaming the ranch atop her horse Captain, riding her snowboard high up in the backcountry, or by her mom’s side in the magic light hour working in the garden.

Brent was born and raised in South Carolina. He grew up exploring and hunting hardwood thickets in the upstate and his frequent expeditions to the lowcountry fostered a lifelong love for the aquatic ecosystems of the intracoastal waterway and lowcountry marsh mud.

Brent and Anne met each other in 2005 in a far away land, New Zealand. While adventuring together during a semester abroad, they vowed to “keep the dream alive” and spent evenings around camp fires dreaming of building a life together close to nature and full of adventure.

In 2008 Brent and Anne welcomed their twin boys, Wyatt and Finn.  Parenthood was a pivotal adventure that led them back to Callahan, CA to raise their boys in a rural landscape.  Wyatt and Finn have taken to the wild streams and mountain valleys hunting, fishing, and exploring until dark.

The Farm

The California Peony Company began as a dinner table dream in 2016.  After attending a peony growing conference in Alaska in 2018, we decided to turn our dream into a reality.  On evenings and weekends, we began to work the field in front of our house.  We planted and irrigated a cover crop, amended the soil with proper nutrients, researched specific peony varieties suitable for cut flower production, designed a field layout and installed an irrigation system... and with the help of about 30 friends and family members from across the country, the “root crew” planted 30,000 roots in the Fall of 2019.

When harvesting peonies, it is important to leave about half of the stems on the plant so that it can continue to generate energy for next season. During harvest, our farm is open for visitors to come see the remaining stems blooming. It is just stunning! Hopefully you can make it out to the farm this harvest season to enjoy it.
